Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir has rejected claims that recent high-level talks with the European Union signal a push towards membership.
As reported by RÚV, she instead insists that the focus of such talks has been on defending Iceland’s trade interests.
Speaking on Rás 1, she said meetings held by both herself and the foreign minister have carried “a very clear message” that Iceland will stand firm against proposed EU tariffs. “I consider all my trips abroad to be primarily advocacy trips,” she said.
She stressed that Von der Leyen’s summer visit to Iceland should not be read as a step towards membership, adding no decision will be made before a vote.
The EU is Iceland’s largest trading partner, Kristrún added, making ongoing dialogue essential regardless of future membership talks.
