Pleased with Our President

Nearly all Icelanders are pleased with the performance of our president, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, according to a poll published Sunday, Vísir reports. The poll was conducted for Stöð2, Vísir and Fréttablaðið. No less than 97.3 percent of those who expressed their opinion stated they were pleased with the president’s job during his first four and a half months in office.

Support for Guðni reaches 100 percent among certain groups, such as voters in the northeast constituency and among supporters of the Reform Party, RÚV reports.

Those least pleased with the president are supporters of the People’s Party, but 34 percent of them were unhappy with his performance. Almost six percent of voters in South Iceland were unhappy with the president’s job.

Since he took office on August 1, Guðni has been in the limelight on many occasions. Following the October 29 parliamentary election, he has given three party leaders the mandate to form a government (a task none of them was able to complete), and has recently put increasing pressure on party leaders to find a solution to the coalition crisis.

The poll was conducted last week by contacting 792 people, 92.6 percent of whom participated. When asked if they were pleased with the president’s performance, 97.3 percent answered “Yes,” while 2.7 percent answered, “No.” Guðni received 39.1 percent of the vote in the presidential election.
