Please Remove the Name of my Old Girlfriend, I’m Getting Married

It is difficult to imagine a more desperate man than the one who came to an Icelandic plastic surgeon, the day before he was supposed to get married.

“Please remove the tattoo with the name of my old girlfriend,” he pleaded.

Plastic surgeon Rafn Rafnsson tells this story in the Iceland Medical Journal Læknablaðið. “This is not the only example of people regretting being tattooed and gotten into trouble over an inappropriate later in life.

Tattoos are common in Iceland, especially among young people. Iceland State Radio, RÚV, this morning reported that children down to eight years old had been tattooed. No Icelandic studies have been done on how many of those who have a tattoo regret getting one, but American studies indicate it may be about 16%. The main reasons were a new job, children or a new mate.

According to Jón Thrándur Steinsson, a specialist in skin diseases, there is no laser equipment to remove tattoos in Iceland. The reason is that they are very expensive.

The article does not say whether the man got to the altar.
