Iceland’s Pirate Party has topped the latest opinion poll, making it the most liked political party in the country for the ninth month in a row.
MMR polled support for political parties, as well as support for the sitting government, between December 1 and 7. The results showed 35.5 percent of respondents supported the Pirate Party, making it the most popular for nine months in a row.
The ruling Progressive Party saw a small jump in support, while the other major parties all lost support between months. It’s support went from 10.8 percent up to 12.9 percent.
Traditionally the biggest party in Iceland, the Independence Party, which is also in the current ruling coalition, dropped slightly from 23.7 percent in November to 22.9 percent this month.
The Left Green Movement stands at 9.4 percent support, down from 9.9 percent last month; the Social Democratic Alliance is on 9.4 percent, from 10.5.
Bright Future is unchanged on 4.6 percent, Dögun is on 1.1 percent, up from 0.7 percent. All other parties polled less than one percent.
The results were compiled by asking respondents who they would vote for if a general election were held today. They were separately asked what they think of the current government.
Overall support for the Progressive and Independence Parties’ coalition government has increased to 35.6 percent this month from 33.1 percent last time and 31.4 percent in October’s results. The government enjoyed around 60 percent support when it started its term in office.
