Photos: Search and Rescue for Entangled Reindeer

The search and rescue crew of Hornarfjördur, southeast Iceland, came to the assistance of two wild reindeer yesterday afternoon whose horns had gotten entangled in fences near Flatey at Mýrar.

According to a press release, the crew was successful but had to be careful as the reindeer are large and strong animals with the ability to inflict harm.

The crew members were called out to a similar assignment last week; two reindeer were reported to be entangled but one of them had come loose on its own account, the other had died stuck in the fence.

Six reindeer are currently known to be stuck together, two and two, with wires around their horns. They are being observed but little can be done if they run away.

One of the reindeer rescued yesterday only has one horn. The other horn was shot off by a reindeer inspector two days earlier as it had become entangled in a fence. The animal came loose but had already gotten entangled again.
