Iceland won against the strong Turkish team, 3-2 (0-0, 2-0, 1-2), in the team’s first game at the 2014 Women’s Ice Hockey World Championships Division II Group B in Laugardalur Arena in Reykjavík, yesterday. The event was opened by Prime Minister of Iceland and ice hockey fan, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson.

The goal scorers for Turkey were Tuba Dokur (number 9) and Fulya Yurt (and number 23). Sarah Shantz-Smiley (number 9), Anna Ágústsdóttir (number 3) and Steinunn Sigurgeirsdóttir (number 10) scored for Iceland. Sera Dogramaci, the Turkish goalkeeper, was super, saving 35 shots on goal.
The prime minister was wearing an Icelandic hockey shirt with the name Gunnlaugsdóttir on the back. He told Iceland Review after the game that it was one of the best and most exiting ice hockey games he had ever seen, describing it as “great entertainment.”
In yesterday’s other games, Spain won against Belgium, 5-0 and Croatia won against Slovenia, 3-2.
Iceland’s next game is against Slovenia at 8 pm tonight.
