A young Russian photographer is currently trying to snap one in every thousand Icelanders.
Varya Lozenko says that Iceland is totally unique, and that is why she is trying to photograph over 300 of its residents. This summer she is traveling all around Iceland, taking photographs of people of all ages, from all walks of life.
Vísir reports that Varya first visited Iceland in 2007, when she fell in love with the country and its people. She set herself the goal of picturing 320 Icelanders, because she wanted each person to represent a thousand of their countrymen and women.
Varya is already halfway through her project and will spend the next few weeks traveling West Iceland to take photos. She is determined to represent a wide variety of ages and backgrounds in her pictures and says she knows all her subjects so far by name and has even become friends with some of them.
Varya takes her pictures on an old 6×6 film camera; saying it is easier to capture people’s stories on film than with digital equipment. She says she has been warmly welcomed everywhere she has been so far.
She plans to turn her pictures into a book, as well as an exhibition in Moscow and in Iceland.
