By Iceland Review

The President of Iceland’s 2012 Export Award was granted by President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson at his residence Bessastaðir this week. The main award went to the company Trefjar ehf., which develops and builds fishing boats from fiber plastic.

The company’s managing director, Auðunn N. Óskarsson, accepted the award, Morgunblaðið reports.

In times when the manufacturing industry has generally been going through difficulties, Trefjar has prevailed and sought new markets at home and abroad, demonstrating model marketing and product development, the jury concluded.

The photographer Ragnar Axelsson (RAX) received a special honorary award presented to individuals who are considered to have promoted Iceland’s reputation abroad and encouraged positive coverage of the country and nation.

With his photographs RAX has for decades documented the lives of people in Iceland and other regions in the North Atlantic and the forces of nature they struggle with.

The Export Award has since 1989 been granted in recognition of notable contributions to trade with foreign countries and obtaining foreign currency for the national economy.
