Search and rescue association ICE-SAR reported up to 20 callouts before 8 pm because of drivers running into trouble on Hellisheiði and other roads in the vicinity.
The Icelandic Met Office had issued a strong gale warning for the region and especially warned drivers of the conditions on Hellisheiði.
