Photo Contest Winner from Remote Farm

The winner of a photography portfolio competition held by the Reykjavík City Museum January 15-16 is Agnieszka Sosnowska. The prize is a monetary award from the Memorial Fund of Magnús Ólafsson in the amount of ISK 400,000 (USD 3,000, EUR 2,800). This is the only fund in Iceland whose goal it is to supports photography as an art form.

Agnieszka was born in Warsaw, Poland, and lives and works at the farm Kleppjárnsstaðir in the remote area of Hróarstunga, Hérað, Northeast Iceland. She holds a BFA degree in photography from Massachusetts College of Art and an MFA degree from Boston University.

Her work has been exhibited all over Iceland, in Poland and in the US, including private ehibits at the Lancaster Museum of Art in Pennsylvania and at the Pleiades Gallery of Art in New York. Last summer, she participated in Verksummerki, an exhibit at the Reykjavík Museum of Photography.

For the past 25 years, she has created a number of self-portraits, which she uses to to increase her understanding of herself, her emotions and expectations. Her photos are theatrical and expressive accounts and documentation of her surroundings in Iceland, Poland and The US.
