One third of all Icelandic households own pets, about as many families as own video camera recorders, reports news station NFS. According to a new household expenditure survey from Statistics Iceland cats are the most popular pet, 12% of households own a cat, followed by dogs which 8% of households own. Goldfish are the third most popular pet, 5% of Icelandic households own goldfish, about as many households as own campers. More households own a parrot than a horse, horses in turn are closely followed by hamsters.
According to Kristín Thorgrímsdóttir at pet store Dýraríki there is increased interested in esoteric pets such as frogs and salamanders.There is also interest in snakes, lizards and turtles but those animals are illegal in Iceland.
