The Left-Green Movement, the Independence Party, and the Progressive Party will each hold internal meetings this afternoon and evening to vote on a proposed coalition government of the three parties, RÚV reports.
If the proposal is voted in, the new coalition will take power tomorrow, led by Left-Green Movement chairperson Katrín Jakobsdóttir as prime minister. Increased taxes on capital gains, extended maternity and paternity leave, and infrastructure development are among the key issues of the proposed government.
President of Iceland Guðni Th. Jóhannesson officially granted Katrín authority to form a government yesterday, following three weeks of talks between the three aforementioned parties. Two Left-Green MPs have opposed the coalition, while a recent poll revealed 49.5 percent of respondents hoped Katrín Jakobsdóttir would be the next prime minister.
