The residents were fast asleep but the boy woke them up by knocking on their door and windows, enabling them to get out of the apartment in time. He also reported the fire to emergency authorities, ruv.is reports.
Shortly after the mother and daughter were out, the fire picked up and the apartment was aflame when firefighters arrived. However, they were quick to extinguish the fire.
Þórður Bogason, sergeant at the Capital Region Fire Department, said this is not the first time that paper boys have been the first to report fires and alert residents.
Significant damage has been caused to the apartment by fire and smoke. Þórður said the source of the fire is unknown.
