Over two hundred children referred to sex-abuse sanctuary

Fréttabladid reports that 227 children have been referred to the Barnahús, Children’s House, this year on grounds of suspected sexual abuse. According to Fréttabladid, the director of Barnahús says this is an all time high.

Over one thousand cases have been referred to Barnahús since it was founded in 1998. Fréttabladid quotes Vigdis saying that 77% of the incidents involve serious or very serious incidents of sexual abuse.

Vigdis also said to Fréttabladid that more incidents are reported in Iceland than in the other Nordic countries. She said that public discussion about the sexual abuse of minors was more developed in Iceland and people better informed.
