The volcanic eruption in Holuhraun continues with similar intensity to recent weeks.
There were over 200 earthquakes in the Bárðarbunga caldera over the weekend, 44 of which were larger than magnitude 3.0. The largest were magnitude 5.3 at 5:54 pm on Sunday and 1:05 this morning.
Observation from the air on Friday found that the depression in the caldera now measures 40 meters, as stated in the latest report from the Civil Protection Department’s Scientific Advisory Board.
Geothermal heat has been increasing in Bárðarbunga. A cauldron in the volcano’s southeastern corner has deepened by about 25 meters over the past month. The depression is considered to be linked to the depression in the caldera.
Over 70 smaller earthquakes were detected in the dike over the weekend.
