Globally, there are around 12 million stateless individuals.

According to Pia Prytz Phiri at UNHCR in Stockholm, statelessness is a big problem which few people know about. UNHCR is aiming towards eradicating the problem before the year 2022.

According to lawyer Hrefna Dögg Gunnarsdóttir, who has conducted research on the issue, the number of stateless individuals currently in Iceland is not especially high—last year there were 106 people without citizenship.
