All outdoor day care facilities (gæsluvellir) in Reykjavík will be closed from September 1 through the winter months. 22 women currently working in outdoor playgrounds were given notice yesterday.
Outdoor day care playgrounds have been available for decades in Reykjavík, and many have used the facilities. The playgrounds are a good alternative when short term sitters are needed for the children. Children over the age of 2 years can be left on the playgrounds for up to three hours. The fee is 100 ISK. Today there are six outdoor day care facilities in Reykjavík.
Iceland State Radio, RÚV, reports discontent among the 22 women who were let go, many of whom have been employed by the city for a long time.
