Oslo Christmas Tree Lit in Central Reykjavík

People gathered on Austurvöllur square in downtown Reykjavík yesterday, the first Sunday in Advent, to witness the lighting of a 12-meter-high Christmas tree, a gift from the city of Oslo.

Reykjavík Brass Band played and the Reykjavík Cathedral choir performed alongside guest singers from Norway. The Majorstuen Choir from Oslo also sang a few Christmas carols, Morgunbladid reports.

Knut Even Lindsjörn, leader of the left-green city council party in Oslo, formally gave the tree to Mayor of Reykjavík Dagur B. Eggertsson and Reykjavík’s residents. A ten-year-old Norwegian-Icelander Árni Óttar Halldórsson lighted the tree.
