OSCE to Monitor Run-up to Elections in Iceland

Representatives of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) are expected to arrive in Iceland next week to familiarize themselves with preparations for the parliamentary elections scheduled for April 25.

The OSCE representatives will then decide whether it is necessary to monitor the elections themselves, Morgunbladid reports.

According to Urdur Gunnarsdóttir, information officer at Iceland’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the purpose of the visit is not election supervision but to examine whether there is a basis for it.

“They are going to meet with […] those involved in organizing the elections, political parties and others,” Gunnarsdóttir said. “Then they will decide whether they want to follow the elections.”

Gunnarsdóttir said this is the first time that OSCE representatives have come to Iceland to monitor the run-up to elections.

“The election supervision has increasingly been looking towards Western countries and has been to Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain and Luxembourg, for example. This does not indicate any judgment on the election system here,” Gunnarsdóttir explained.

Gunnarsdóttir said she believed the OSCE representatives had decided to come to Iceland primarily because of the recent protests and instability in Icelandic society.

“It’s also an influential factor that elections are being called for two years ahead of schedule. We are also discussing various things surrounding the election’s execution, such as individual candidacy, a constitutional parliament and other issues, which institutions like OSCE typically take an interest in,” Gunnarsdóttir concluded.
