All four opposition parties in Iceland, the Pirate Party, the Left-Green Movement, Bright Future and the Social Democratic Alliance, have declared a willingness to form a government together following Saturday’s parliamentary election, should they get the mandate of voters to do so. That was the result of their meeting in Lækjarbrekka, Reykjavík, this morning, RÚV reports.
Following the meeting, which was called by the Pirate Party, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, chair of the Left-Green Movement posted on her Facebook page, “During two meetings, we have examined the parties’ emphases for the election and we sense a great deal of common ground. We consider the cooperation of these parties a clear alternative to the governing parties, able to create new opportunities for Icelandic society. On that basis, we see ample reason to look into the possibility of forming a majority government, should these parties receive the mandate to do so in the coming election.”
The leaders of the rest of the parties supported that statement.
Birgitta Jónsdóttir, MP for the Pirate Party, posted a message on Facebook, calling the situation “Amazing times.”
