Opinion Poll: Left Green and Independence Party With Most Support

Parliamentary elections will be held October 28th, following the disbanding of the government after less than a year in power. Icelandic media company, 365, which currently owns newspaper Fréttablaðið, news site Vísir and news station Stöð 2, posted an opinion poll this morning. Its results indicate that the current record number of seven parties would be joined by an eighth party, the People’s Party.

Right-wing party Independence Party and the Left-Green Movement both lead with approximately 23% support.

The Pirate Party is the third largest party, with 13.7%. Next, comes the People’s Party with nearly 11%, a new party that ran in last year’s parliamentary election, but failed to pass the 5% threshold. The Progressive Party gets roughly 10% and Bright Future about 7%. The Reform Party and The Social Democratic Alliance each get roughly 5%.

Fréttablaðið Opinion Poll - 19/09/2017
The governing body of Bright Future elected to disband the governing coalition after a case of breached confidence regarding a case of restored honor. The case revolves around the convicted pedophile Hjalti Sigurjón Hauksson, who had his honor restored recently. The Reform Party soon followed, suggesting an election would be the next logical step.
