Operation on Iceland’s Former PM Successful

Chairman of the Independence Party and former Prime Minister of Iceland Geir H. Haarde underwent a successful scopi operation at the University Hospital in Amsterdam yesterday.

Haarde had been diagnosed with a malign tumor in his throat, which was removed with yesterday’s operation, Fréttabladid reports.

According to an announcement from the Independence Party, the operation was successful and Haarde is expected to return to his duties later this week. His treatment in Amsterdam will continue after about two months.

Haarde recently announced that he had cancer and that he would therefore not run for chairman of the Independence Party at their general meeting in March.
