Opera Singer Begins Summer Concert Tour

Soprano singer Anna Jónsdóttir sets off today on her summer tour of Iceland, hoping to introduce as many people as possible to her unique and creative style.

Anna calls her tour “Up, Down and in Between” and follows the release of her album, VAR, which was recorded at Akranes lighthouse and inside one of the disused fish oil rendering tanks at Djúpavík in the Westfjords.

The locations’ unique acoustics allowed her to perform her whole album of old Icelandic folk songs without accompaniment—except for two tracks on which Svavar Knútur plays harmonium.

In keeping with the album, Anna’s summer concerts will be unaccompanied, and take place in unusual locations. These include Klettshellir, a cave in the Westman Islands only accessible by sea; an old factory, a church, two lighthouses, two other caves and an avalanche protection barrier.

“For me it is amazing to be able to sing this beautiful music in incomparable surroundings. To step out of the traditional concert space and get out “onto the floor” with the crowd. Under these conditions, where people often have to stand, and by singing without accompaniment, a special atmosphere is created and a close link with the listener. I enjoy talking a little bit about the songs, because if there’s a story behind them it is like both I and the listeners succumb to their spell,” Anna explains. She adds that there is no concert that can compare to an intimate gig by candle light in a cave or disused factory.
