Only One Place in Iceland Cut Off by the Snow

Despite record snow in December, there is only one place in Iceland without road connection—Mjóifjörður in the East Fjords.

The only way to currently travel to Mjófjörður is by the twice weekly post boat, departing from Neskaupsstaður on Mondays and Thursdays.

On the main roads the mountain passes of Dynjandisheiði and Hrafnseyrarheiði in the West Fjords are closed.

The road to Dettifoss waterfall in North East Iceland is also closed and Mosfellsheiði from Reykjavík to Þingvellir National Park is closed too.

But if you really need to travel to Þingvellir you can take the road from Selfoss in the south and stil. enjoy the winter beauty of the old parliament place.

The Road Authority map of open and closed roads can be found here.
