During the second quarter of the year, the unemployment rate in Iceland was 3.6 percent, according to new figures from Statistics Iceland. A total of 199,300 people, aged 16-74, were in the work force. Among those, 192,100 were employed and 7,200 unemployed, but looking for a job. Participation in the job market was 85 percent. The unemployment rate in the capital area was 4.3 percent, but 2.4 percent outside it. Slightly more women than men were unemployed, or 3,800, compared with 3,400 men.
Since the second quarter of last year, the number of employed people has increased by 5,600. During the same period, the number of unemployed people decreased by 2,600.
During the second quarter of this year, 800 people had been without a job for 12 months or more, compared with 900 during the same period the previous year.
The average length of the work week for full-time workers during the second quarter of this year was 45.2 hours, while the average work week for part-time employees was 25.2 hours.
