A website in five different languages mapping the locations of and providing information on almost 200 swimming pools and natural hot springs around Iceland was launched earlier this month targeting Icelandic travelers and tourists.
Although the website is still under development, the current content offers users a good overview of pools in the southwest and north, with additional regions and a hot springs section being added over time.
Sundlaugar.is is the brainchild of multimedia designer Robert van Spanje, who submitted the website as his final project at the Reykjavík School of Multimedia last spring.
On why he felt it was important to launch a swimming pool database, van Spanje, who is Dutch, said, “Looking for such an overview of swimming pools myself, I was surprised to find only bits and pieces when swimming pools are such a big part of Iceland and its culture.”
Van Spanje’s future plans include further collaboration with organizations related to this project as well as with the websites’ users.
“I hope to have a website with a lot of interactivity, which will make it much more than just a telephone book with swimming pools listed,” van Spanje explained.
