Online Orders and Expensive Steaks

Online Christmas shopping appears to be increasingly popular among Icelanders, according to RÚV. Post offices are busy receiving orders from abroad, but the number of domestic online orders is also up.

People picking up parcels are advised to arrive before noon to avoid long lines. Brynjar Smári Rúnarsson, marketing director at Pósturinn, the Icelandic mail service, stated, “We’re seeing a considerable increase since last year. Looking at the period from August through October, we’re talking about a 43 percent increase.”

A forecast published by the Center for Retail Studies predicts there will be more expensive steaks and fancier wines on the tables of Icelanders this Christmas than a year ago. The forecast also expects an increased sale of electronics for recreation, such as smartphones and TVs.

Emil B. Karlsson, the center’s director, explained, “The largest increase is in what we call durable goods: furniture, large electronics and such.” In October, for example, the sale of beds went up by 23 percent. Although tariffs no longer apply to clothing, the sale of clothing has not increased.

Brynjar suggests that the strong króna has led many Icelanders to travel abroad and purchase their clothing there.
