One Million Phone Users Download Icelandic Guitar Tuner

Over one million cell phone users in 202 countries have downloaded an Icelandic guitar tuner on their phones. The tuner, Tunerific, was developed by Icelandic startup company Hugvakinn, founded at the University of Iceland. Hugvakinn also designed an accompanying book of chords for cell phones.

The company is the result of the work of a student in computer science, Guðmundur Freyr Jónasson, and his supervisor, Jóhann Pétur Malmquist, a professor at the Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science.

According to the University of Iceland website, collaboration with Nokia, the Finnish cell phone company, enabled the pair to achieve such success. Nokia sold the software in their OVI-online store.

Guðmundur and Jóhann plan to develop the program further and are also working on other software.
