One Hundred Thousand Visitors to Harpa Concert Hall

By Iceland Review

Since the new concert and conference center Harpa opened at the Reykjavík seaside in early May, almost 100,000 people have attended concerts and other events held there. In addition, between 5,000 and 10,000 people have been on tours in Harpa or dined at the in-house restaurant.

Steinunn Birna Ragnarsdóttir, Harpa’s musical director, told Morgunbladid that the numbers of those booking tours is growing steadily, especially among foreign tourists.

There are two organized tours every day but people can also book specialized tours. “Some people are very interested in the architecture and others in the building’s acoustics,” Ragnarsdóttir said.

As for concerts and conferences, a number of events have been scheduled as far ahead as 2015. “There are very solid and good bookings for the building and it looks like the development will continue this way,” she commented.

“Personally, I’m not surprised because I knew there was significant demand, but I suppose many others are surprised,” Ragnarsdóttir said of Harpa’s popularity.
