According to a new study on the condition of the hiking area in Þórsmörk, 30 percent of the paths were in a poor or very poor condition while in Landmannalaguar the ratio was found to be 12 percent.
No exact numbers on how many tourists walk the trail each year are available but estimates are for 75,000 to 100,000 people.
Guide Hermann Valsson told visir.is that funding is desperately needed to maintain the area.
