One of Four Pregnant Women Over 40 Has Abortion

In Iceland one of every four pregnant women who are over 40 has an abortion. The abortion rate for women at this age has been steady for years. This age group has the second highest abortion rate after women under 20.

The risk of complications during pregnancy increases with age. For example, there is an increased possibility of having a child with Downs syndrome. Sóley S. Bender, associate professor in the the faculty of nursing at the University of Iceland, told Morgunbladid that speculations about the health of the fetus are naturally more common among older women. She also suggests that the high rate of abortion could also be because women have already reached the number of children they want to have and simply do not wish to have any more.

Even though Icelandic society encourages people to have children, there is a certain tendency to “consider pregnancy carefully” and many women believe they are not fit enough at this age to raise children, Sóley added.
