One Dead, Several Injured in South Iceland Bus Accident

One woman in her 20s is dead and seven people seriously injured following a bus accident in South Iceland yesterday, just west of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, RÚV reports.

The bus was carrying 45 passengers, a tour group from China, when it crashed into a passenger vehicle. The bus driver was Icelandic. One female passenger was ruled dead at the scene. Twelve others were flown to Reykjavík by helicopter with varying injuries, some in critical condition.

Ring Road One was closed due to the accident but has since been reopened. The Icelandic Red Cross set up a crisis centre in Kirkjubæjarklaustur which attended to over thirty people, who were later moved to a health care centre in Selfoss, South Iceland.

Over 60 members of the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue assisted on the scene with transport of injured people, road closure, and other tasks.

The Icelandic Blood Bank has made a call for blood donations following the accident.
