One Billion Rising against Violence in Iceland

The initiative One Billion Rising, organized by UN WOMEN to end violence against women, will take place across Iceland today at 12 noon with dancing in Reykjavík in the southwest, Akureyri in the northeast, Ísafjörður in the West Fjords and Seyðisfjörður in the East Fjords.

This year, the event will be held in conjunction with the Sónar Reykjavík music festival and RVK Lunch Beat. In Reykjavík the dancing will take place in Harpa concert and conference center and in Akureyri in Hof culture center, ruv.is reports.

The campaign was launched on Valentine’s Day in 2012 as a call to action based on the statistic that one in three women will be beaten or raped during her lifetime, which adds up to one billion women and girls.

Last year, one billion people gathered in 207 countries and danced against violence. In Iceland, the initiative attracted 3,000 people.
