Oldest Icelander Passes Away

Guðríður Guðbrandsdóttir, who has been the oldest living Icelander since 2011, passed away yesterday morning at the nursing home Grund in Reykjavík.

She was 109 years and 33 days old, RÚV reports. Only three Icelanders are known to have reached a higher age.

Guðríður was born at Spágilsstaðir in Laxárdalur, in the Dalir region of West Iceland, on May 23 1906.

She was the sixth in line of 11 siblings, all of whom are now deceased.

A press release from loved ones states that Guðríður was blessed with a good memory until the very end. She had always been a handicrafts enthusiast and had learned how to crochet over the last few years. She could recite poetry and songs, including Gilsbakkaþula, all her long life.
