Ólafur Gunnarsson Novel Celebrated in France

olafurgunnarssonThe novel Öxin og jördin (“The Axe and the Earth”) by Ólafur Gunnarsson has received good reviews in the French media lately.

The book is a historical novel featuring the last Catholic Icelandic bishop Jón Arason who was decapitated along with two of his sons at the Reformation in Iceland at Skálholt in 1550.

La Liberté stated that the book is much more than a historical novel with France Catolique celebrating the fact that French readers now have an opportunity to get to know Jón Arason, one of the most thrilling characters of Christianity in Europe, a press release states.

The book, which earned the Icelandic Literature Award in 2003, was recently published in France by the respected publishing house Gaia, which had previously released Gunnarsson’s novel Tröllakirkja (“Troll Church”).
