The Icelandic/Danish artist Ólafur Elíasson received a Crystal Award in Davos, Switzerland Wednesday at the World Economic Forum annual meeting. The awards celebrate the achievements of leading artists committed to improving the state of the world. This was the 22nd time the awards were presented.
Ólafur received the award for his leadership in creating inclusive communities. He was praised for his designs which have helped redefine the essence of cities and communities. His Little Sun project received a special mention for “addressing the need for providing light in a sustainable way that benefits communities without electricity,” besides creating local jobs and generating local profits.
Three other people received a Crystal Award. They are actress Yao Chen, for her leadership in raising awareness of the refugee crisis, actor Leonardo DiCaprio, for his leadership in tackling the climate crisis, and entrepreneur will.i.am, for his leadership in creating educational opportunities for the underserved.
