Icelandic glossy magazine Nýtt Líf has named Jóhanna Kristjánsdóttir Woman of the Year. Kristjánsdóttir was considered worthy of the title, among other things, for a charity auction she organized earlier this year to build a school in Sanaa, Yemen.
The auction was held in late August, raising ISK millions (ISK 1 million = USD 8,500, EUR 6,400)—a sufficient amount for constructing the school, now providing 132 children in Yemen with education, Fréttabladid reports.
Kristjánsdóttir is the 18th woman to receive the honor of being named Woman of the Year by Nýtt Líf. Other women whose work has been recognized in such a way are former President of Iceland Vigdís Finnbogadóttir and Iceland’s current First Lady Dorrit Moussaieff.
