Nurses Sign New Contact with Iceland Hospital

An updated version of the institutional contract for nurses employed at Landspítali National University Hospital was signed around 11 pm last night. Chair of the Nurses’ Union Elsa B. Friðfinnsdóttir encourages her colleagues to withdraw their resignations.

Both Elsa and director of Landspítali Björn Zoëga told RÚV that they are satisfied with the agreement but wouldn’t disclose its content before it has been presented to nurses, as will happen at meetings today.

“We celebrate this milestone, to have reached an agreement which is reasonable for both parties,” commented Björn, as reported on, adding that he had always been optimistic that the wage dispute could be resolved. Almost 300 nurses had resigned. “I sincerely hope that everyone will come back.”

When asked whether she is optimistic that the new contract will make the nurses change their minds, Elsa stated, “I know they had high expectations … and I hope that they find this a big enough step to withdraw their resignations. But each person must decide for themselves.”

Nurses will have at least 24 hours to consider the offer.
