Nurse Charged with Manslaughter

The Director of Public Prosecutions in Iceland has charged Landspítali National University Hospital and a nurse working at the hospital’s intensive care unit with manslaughter due to negligence after a patient in their care died in October 2012, reports.

This is the first time that the hospital and a staff member are charged with manslaughter. The hospital said in a statement that the case has had a significant impact on its staff and that Icelandic health care is at a crossroads.

The nurse is currently on a leave of absence.

The wife of the deceased patient said in an interview with Stöð 2 that she does not think it is right to charge the nurse.
