Number of drug addicts trebled

The number of drug addicts in Iceland is three times greater than it was 10 years ago reports the Icelandic Broadcasting Service, RÚV. According to an annual report from the National Center for Addiction Medicine, SÁÁ, the problem is greater than ever before and the drug addicts are sicker than ever.

In the last 10 years, the illegal drug market has developed substantially and those who control it make use of the newest technology in pharmacology, communications and shipping methods.

The report states that the greater Reykjavík area is getting to be more and more like a big city with the associated drug usage. The drugs are stronger, there is more choice, and the drug habits are more varied and more dangerous.

The number of addicts who inject themselves is increasing and the popularity of prescription drugs is also increasing. The the drugs of choice are ritalin and cantalgin pills. The use of stimulating substances has increased the most in the 20 – 30 year old age group, while marijuana usage has increased in all age groups.
