Norwegians Help Single Icelandic Father

By Iceland Review

Almost 300 Norwegians have in the past days offered donations to Hagbarður Valsson, a single father of four originally from Iceland. Hagbarður’s fiancé Guðrún Guðmunda Sigurðardóttir died suddenly last year when she was seven months pregnant.

The baby girl, who is now one-and-a-half years old, was miraculously saved by emergency caesarian section on the couple’s living room floor but has disabilities, nrk.no reports.

The local authorities in Brennalia, Nittedal, where Hagbarður lives, provided him with social housing, big enough for the entire family, last week. They moved in on Saturday and now, thanks to donations, have enough furniture.

Family friend Elisabeth Waal Presthagen advertised for donations on finn.no and almost 300 people responded, offering food, clothing and furniture.

“It feels very strange to be in the spotlight and receive so much help. It feels surreal,” Hagbarður commented. “Our story touches people. I’m extremely grateful for everything.”

Elisabeth remarked that it can be difficult to ask for help and therefore she took the initiative—after asking Hagbarður, she stressed.
