An increasing number of Japanese tourists are traveling to Iceland to witness the northern lights, according to Ingi Þór Guðmundsson, head of sales and marketing at Air Iceland. “The Japanese have a lot of interest in the northern lights and this market is always growing,” he told mbl.is.

An agreement was recently finalized between Air Iceland and travel agency Viking Inc. in Tokyo for northern lights flights from Reykjavík.
The first trip took place in November and bookings have been good, Ingi Þór said. Three trips are planned for February with around 100 seats having been sold so far.
A Fokker plane is used for the one-hour flights, which allows passengers to travel above the clouds to get an optimal view of the northern lights.
