New Year’s celebrations in Iceland’s capital city, Reykjavík, went viral on TikTok after one lucky user posted a video of the moment the Northern Lights appeared, just as the clock struck twelve.
Amid the colourful fireworks exploding over Reykjavík’s skyline—the smoky silhouette of Hallgrímskirkja church making up part of the scene—the beautiful celestial phenomenon known as the Aurora Borealis made an appearance in the sky.
As originally reported by K100 mbl, TikTok user Jessý managed to capture the moment, captioning;
“Genuinely one of the coolest things I’ve ever witnessed. Hope it’s a good omen for 2025!”
As of today, the video has had 142.1 thousand likes, and 1693 comments.
As we reported last week, the Northern Lights were expected to be particularly dramatic over New Year’s Eve due to the solar maximum – an ejection of charged particles from the sun that occurs every eleven years.
