North Sailing Finalist for Sustainability Award

The whale-watching company North Sailing in Húsavík, North Iceland, is a finalist for a 2016 Tourism for Tomorrow Award, presented by the World Travel and Tourism Council . The company is nominated for an Innovation Award for its installation of a regenerative plug-in hybrid propulsion system on its renovated vessel Opal―the first ship in the world to use such technology. Moreover, the company plans for its fleet to be completely carbon free by 2020.

According to the World Travel and Tourism website, “The WTTC Tourism for Tomorrow Awards are aimed at recognising best practice in sustainable tourism within the industry globally, based upon the principles of environmentally friendly operations; support for the protection of cultural and natural heritage; and direct benefits to the social and economic well-being of local people in travel destinations around the world.”
