North Iceland Firms to Join Race for Greenland Market

Companies in the Eyjafjörður region in Northeast Iceland jointly launched a two-year initiative earlier this month to market themselves in Greenland, where 30 large projects in the fields of oil production, mining and development of infrastructure are planned in the near future.

Þorvaldur Lúðvík Sigurjónsson, managing director of the Eyjafjörður Employment Development Association (AFE), told that it is clear that significant infrastructure, technological knowhow and other professional knowledge is lacking in Greenland.

“We’re the most obvious option regarding transport, healthcare services and other aspects, and have decades of experience of servicing Greenland,” he commented, albeit admitting that the small community is late in joining the marketing race and that it may prove difficult to compete with international companies.

Extensive work lies before AFE in the next 24 months, Þorvaldur stated, adding that solidarity helps. “Many different companies from various fields have come together, joined hands and efforts instead of each moving in their own direction.”
