North Iceland a Winter Wonderland

Akureyri and surrounding regions in north Iceland have seen heavy snow in the past days. Police say a 25-centimeter thick blanket of snow is now covering the town. Drivers have been careful and so no traffic accidents have been reported.

The road between Dalvík and Ólafsfjördur was closed yesterday due to avalanches. No one has been harmed, mbl.is reports.

Continued snowfall and frosty temperatures are forecast, to the delight of skiers and snowboarders. The Akureyri ski resort opened last weekend as the first ski resort in Iceland to open this year. Last year, Dalvík was first.
