North Iceland’s Mývatn Cycling Path Planned

The local district Skútustaðahreppur is planning to construct a 40-kilometer bicycling path around lake Mývatn in northeast Iceland, a highly popular tourist destination.

The path would be located next to the highway, closer to the lake, and constructed as much as possible on top of an older path to cause as little disruption to the environment as possible, reports.

The region is already sought after by hikers and bikers. “It could be part of the region’s recreation options,” said the district’s chair Guðrún María Valeirsdóttir. “It would be a different experience than traveling on the highway.”

The project has not yet been funded and so it is unclear when it can be carried out but Guðrún said they are determined to make it happen.
