Nordic Council Session and Awards

The Nordic Council Session opened in Harpa Concert Hall today with about 1,000 participants, RÚV reports. Höskuldur Þórhallsson, chairman of the Icelandic division of the Nordic Council, predicts the conference will be a milestone, since numerous resolutions will be passed concerning political solidarity among the Nordic countries, more cooperation and common goals regarding refugee issues.

The five Nordic capital cities take turns hosting the Session. Prime ministers, as well as many other ministers from the Nordic and Baltic Countries attend to discuss international affairs and the future.

Höskuldur explains, “We’re also discussing current affairs: the refugee problem, the Ukraine-Russia conflict, Palestine and Israel, and other volatile subjects, and that’s not the custom in Nordic cooperation, and especially within the Nordic Council, and this is why I think this Session will be a milestone on the road toward improved and increased Nordic cooperation.”

The highlight of the conference will no doubt be tonight’s award ceremony at 7:30 pm where five prizes will be awarded in the following categories: children and young children’s literature, film, literature, music, and nature and environment.

The event, which will be broadcast live, is hosted by actress Charlotte Bøving and actor Ólafur Egill Egilsson. For a list of nominees, please visit this the Nordic Council’s website.
