No dangerous gases were detected in the popular Crystal Ice Cave in Breiðamerkurjökull glacier yesterday following concerns, RÚV reports. The Icelandic Met Office was alerted two days ago to an unusual smell in the Crystal Ice Cave, a popular tourist destination in Southeast Iceland. Earlier measurements found a lack of oxygen in the cave.
Bjarki Kaldalóns Friis, a specialist at the Icelandic Met Office, says people who visited the cave two days ago “experienced both odour and discomfort by the cave.” He commends the quick reaction of tour operators to the issue, adding that extreme caution should always be exercised in the country’s ice caves.
Toxic gases released by geothermal activity can collect in ice caves, posing a threat to human safety.
