No Place for the Dead in Reykjavík

Within six to eight years the graveyards in the capital area will be completely full, according to Þórsteinn Ragnarsson, director of the service company for graveyards in Reykjavík, Kirkjugarðar Reykjavíkurprófastsdæma.

The newest cemetry, Gufunes graveyeard in the suburb of Grafarvogur, was opened in 1980 and will be full in six to eight years, ruv.is reports.

Þorsteinn says a new graveyard needs to be planned for the capital area but it seems that the planning committee of Reykjavík has not taken the idea up for consideration.

He says that he hopes that a new 22-hectare graveyard will be built by Úlfarfell mountain on the outskirts of the capital area, as approved before the economic collapse of 2008.
